Alpine Thai

Thai street food and crafted coffee in the alpine village of Hanmer Springs; a little slice of Thailand in New Zealand's Southern Alps.

Coffee

We source our coffee beans from Christchurch-based Underground Coffee Roasters. We are the only provider of their organic, Fair Trade Beatnik blend in Hanmer Springs.
Our experienced barista, Gun, honed his coffee making skills working in cafes in Perth, Queenstown and Wanaka. In addition to espresso coffee, we sell Thai iced milk tea, matcha and the world's best brew, Yorkshire Tea.

Thai

Our kitchen team is 100% Thai with over a century of combined experience living and cooking in Thailand. We have a small menu of Thai dishes, cooked fresh to order in the wok, providing a balance of the spicy, sweet, salty & sour flavours that make Thai food unique.

The menu items marked with an 'S' are traditionally spicy dishes in Thailand. They can be ordered mild, medium, hot or Thai hot, however please note that we use Thai spice levels so you may want to drop down a level if you are used to Kiwi heat.
The menu is inspired by our favourite street food stalls in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Buriram and beyond. We make our gang (curry) in a traditional Thai-style: spicy and intended to be eaten from a bowl together with spoonfuls of rice.
Our lunch menu contains regional dishes, including Khao Soi, Som Tam & Nam Tok, that are not commonly found in restaurants outside of Thailand.

About

Som Tam was started in 2024 by two new Kiwis, Gun & Andrew, through their shared passion for coffee and Thai food. Gun is from Buriram in the Isaan region of Thailand. He has been working as a barista and in Thai restaurants in New Zealand & Australia for over a decade.
Andrew is a scientist from Sheffield in the north of England. When not taking food orders, he works in space & ocean radar technology. Our two Thai chefs, Num & Ar, complete the Som Tam team.
What does Som Tam mean? It's a spicy Thai salad made with raw vegetables, chilli, garlic, tamarind, dried shrimp & fish sauce. If you venture into the kitchen of any Thai restaurant after closing time then you will usually see the staff sharing a plate of som tam. It's the ultimate Thai comfort food; the fish & chips or steak pie of Thailand, but a tad more spicy.
